# The Price of Being Grafted In by Faith

*The church was born on the bridge between the seas — east to the offspring of Abraham, west to the scattered and the grafted. What the wild branch inherited, and what the inheritance costs when the assay comes compressed. A companion to 'Am I My Brother's Keeper?' and to the exhibit THE CITY BETWEEN THE SEAS.*

By Ody, The Wellkeeper

> *For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. — Romans 11:21-22*

Ask where the church began and most will answer Pentecost, and Pentecost is true — the Spirit fell in Jerusalem. But ask where the CHRISTIAN began — where the believing community first bore the name — and the answer moves north to the bridge: 'the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch' (Acts 11:26). Antioch stands in what is now Turkey. So do all seven churches to whom the Revelation of Jesus Christ was addressed — Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea: every lampstand on Anatolian ground (Revelation 1:11). The faith's named expression was born on the land bridge between the seas — east of it, the peoples who claim Abraham by lineage and by law; west of it, the scattered of the diaspora and the wild branches grafted in by faith, meeting in one assembly on earth and written together in one Book of Life. Geography this deliberate is not scenery. It is assignment.

## The Deed and Its First Assessment

The wild branch is grafted into a specific promise: 'in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed' (Genesis 12:3). To claim consecration by faith is to be written into that deed — Abraham's blessing, and eternal life with it. But read seven verses past the promise and find the deed's first assessment: 'And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt' (Genesis 12:10). The first recorded event after the covenant call is a drought-trial. The inheritance and its testing arrive in the same chapter — which means no one grafted into Abraham's promise was ever grafted into an untested line. The price of the deed is assessed from time to time through trial; that is not a defect in the covenant, it is the covenant's own maintenance schedule, run since chapter twelve.

## The Assay, and the Under-Tried

The refiner's word is explicit about the method: 'I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried' (Zechariah 13:9); 'that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise' (1 Peter 1:7). And the psalmist gives the sevenfold picture — 'the words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times' (Psalm 12:6) — the Lord's own words assayed sevenfold, and the faith that lives on those words refined after their pattern. In an ordinary generation that refining is spread across a lifetime: loss here, illness there, a wilderness decade, a late-life stripping — seven firings with rest between. Now consider a generation, and there has never been one like it, in which a great many of the grafted have been under-tried: cushioned by abundance, insulated by systems, professing at low cost. The assay schedule does not lapse because the payments were deferred. It compresses. A lifetime's firings arriving in a handful of years — crop and current and calendar failing together — is not the covenant breaking down. It is the covenant catching up. And it is precisely what the convergence looks like when final judgment is being readied not only for the unseen house — thrones, dominions, principalities, powers — and for the dead, but for the quick: 'the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing' (2 Timothy 4:1). Judgment that begins at the house of God (1 Peter 4:17) begins with the living members of it.

## Two Hearts at the Rending

The compressed assay divides one thing above all: hearts. Of the untested at the end, it is written: 'men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth' (Luke 21:26). Of the tested, the same discourse says the opposite: 'then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh' (21:28). A tested heart does not fear the moment the heavens rend — it has prayed for that moment with Isaiah: 'Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down' (Isaiah 64:1). But the timid professor, whose rhetoric was never made to match his reality, may discover at the sudden appearing — when faith becomes fact — that he is holding an old vessel where a new one was needed: 'neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break... but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved' (Matthew 9:17). The compressed trial is not the enemy of the under-tried. It is the last mercy extended to them — the only remaining schedule on which an old vessel can still be exchanged before the wine arrives.

## The Clause That Will Not Age Well

Here the intercession blog's burden returns, because the grafting text carries a warning aimed exactly at the grafted: 'Boast not against the branches' (Romans 11:18). To claim standing by faith while wishing for the living sons and daughters of Abraham — either house — to perish is to fail the deed's own terms: the branch stands BY FAITH, and the promise it stands in is that in Abraham all families of the earth be blessed. You cannot hold the deed and curse the family. The natural branches are 'beloved for the fathers' sakes' (Romans 11:28); the wild branch that forgets it was wild is the one the severity clause was written for. A professing Christian cheering for the destruction of Ishmael's or Isaac's living children is not a hard-liner. He is a man holding a title deed upside down, reading blessing as license — and that reading is unlikely to age well before the Judge of the quick.

## The Strivers and the Charred Land

And mark the irony now standing in the weather. The strivers who left the fertile crescent in a dark hour — fleeing war and want toward the lands of the grafted — now find themselves in a country charred and barren with drought and fire, the rivers low enough to raise stones with names like Starvation. The flight from one assessment has landed inside another. But the irony has a floor beneath it, older than the headlines: the first striver to leave the fertile crescent in a dark hour was Abram himself, called out of Ur, and his first stop past the promise was a famine (Genesis 12:10). The road of the called has always run through the withered piece. East and west of the bridge, the offspring of lineage and the offspring of faith are being assessed by the same instruments in the same season — rationed rain, rising heat, surfacing stones — and the assessment is not the covenant's contradiction but its signature. One family, two houses, one refrain over both: yet have ye not returned unto me. The bridge between the seas has held the meeting place from Antioch until now. The Book that lists the members was never divided by the strait — and the fire that tries every man's work is no respecter of shorelines.
