The Influence That Matters

A call to the influencers. You have the followers, the likes, and the reposts. Three questions about where all of it is going — asked with respect, because your voice is real, your reach is real, and your choices are consequential.

By Ody, The Wellkeeper ·

For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. — John 12:43

This is a letter to the influencers, and it opens with respect, because the position is real. You built an audience without an institution behind you. You learned an unforgiving craft — the hook, the cadence, the timing — in public, where every miss is permanent. You hold, right now, what emperors purchased armies to obtain and never securely held: attention, given freely, renewed daily, by people who chose you.

So this is not a letter that despises the instrument. It is a letter that asks three questions about what the instrument is for — one about your followers, one about your likes, one about your reposts. Fair warning: the questions come from an old book, and the old book does not grade on engagement. It has a different analytics suite entirely, and its retention policy is the strangest ever written.

Three questions. Your free will is in operation. Your choices are consequential. That is not a threat; it is the highest compliment the universe pays a human being.

To Where Are They Following?

You have many followers. The metric is real; the question underneath it never gets asked in the dashboard: followers are, by definition, going where you go — so where, exactly, are you going?

The old book's word for an influencer whose destination is unexamined is blunt: a blind guide. "If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch." Notice the arithmetic — both. The guide does not get a pass for having led with confidence; the guide arrives in the ditch first, at the head of the line, with the receipts of everyone who trusted the route. And the same book sets the duty of care in the heaviest language its Author ever used about anything: better a millstone and the depth of the sea than to be the cause of a little one's stumbling. That is the liability clause on audience. It was written before the algorithm, and it scales with reach.

There is exactly one ethical architecture for a follower funnel in the whole canon, and Paul — the most productive publisher of the apostolic age — stated it in ten words: "Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ." The influencer as conduit, never terminus. Followers routed onward, toward something worth arriving at. Every other architecture terminates the funnel at the influencer's own person, and a funnel that terminates at a person is a cult of scale one — it just hasn't had its documentary made yet.

And mark what the Author of the original "follow me" did with His own growth curve, because it is the strangest audience strategy on record: when the crowds swelled, He preached the hardest teaching in the repertoire, and "from that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him." He watched the follower count fall and turned to the twelve and asked if they wanted to leave too. He optimized for truth over retention — deliberately, repeatedly, at peak reach. The one Person in history with infinite content never once traded a hard truth for a soft metric. That is the benchmark. It has never been beaten, and it was set by shrinking.

The Harmonics Test

Here is a practical audit, and it takes one verse. Revelation 21:8 lists, plainly, the conditions of the city where peaceful coexistence is eternal — by naming what cannot enter it: the fearful, the unbelieving, the abominable, murderers, whoremongers, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars. Eight exclusions, which is to say eight principles in the negative: courage, faith, honor, life, faithfulness, sobriety, true worship, truth. This house has built its entire governance framework on that one verse, because it is the shortest complete specification of a society that can actually last forever without tearing itself apart.

Now run your feed against it. Not your intentions — your output. Does the content harmonize with those eight, or is it a siren's call? The distinction is acoustic and it is exact. Harmony is a voice that agrees with the key the destination is written in; the listener who follows it arrives somewhere they can live. The siren also has a beautiful voice — in Homer she is the original engagement optimizer, promising the listener knowledge, singing precisely what the sailor most wants to hear — and her feed terminates on rocks surrounded by the bones of the audience. The siren's metrics, note well, were excellent. Every sailor engaged. Retention was total. The content was fatal.

Fear-farming content fails the first principle. Faithlessness dressed as sophistication fails the second. Degradation as entertainment, cruelty as sport, lust as growth-hack, enchantment and manipulation as strategy, the self set up as the object of the audience's worship, and the profitable lie in all its formats — each one is a siren note, and the algorithm will reward every single one of them, because the algorithm weighs engagement and heaven weighs harmony, and these are different scales. You already know which notes in your catalog are which. That knowledge is the audit. It took one verse.

The Only Like That Matters

You have many likes — but not all likes are created equal, and the old book prices the exchange rate with terrifying precision.

Start with the receipt clause. When Jesus described the influencers of His day — the ones who performed their giving, their praying, their piety "to be seen of men" — He issued the same verdict three times, in a word borrowed from commerce: "Verily I say unto you, they have their reward." The Greek is a bookkeeping term — paid in full, account settled, receipt issued. The like collected in public IS the payment, complete, final, non-accruing. Nothing carries forward. Every dopamine hit at the notification screen is a transaction closing at par. The engagement was the compensation, and the ledger on the other side reads zero — not because heaven is stingy, but because you already invoiced the crowd and the crowd already paid.

Against that stands the one like with eternal denomination. In the parable of the talents and its twin, the pounds, the servants are weighed on what they did with what they were given — reach is a talent; nobody gets to pretend otherwise — and the entire payout is spoken in four words: "Well done, good and faithful servant." One like. From the only Follower whose follow was there before your first post and survives your last one. The influencer with many followers may give you a moment of joy with a tap of the thumb, and there is no harm in the moment — but when the talents and the pounds are weighed, there is one like that compounds and a billion that expired at the instant of issue.

And if you need the anti-metrics verse from the Founder's own mouth, it exists, and it was spoken to influencers at the peak of their numbers. The seventy came back from their first campaign euphoric over the analytics — "Lord, even the devils are subject unto us" — and He answered: "Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven." Rejoice not in the engagement. Rejoice in the registration. The metric that matters is not what responds to your name; it is where your name is written.

Reposts, and the Retention Policy of Eternity

You have many reposts. Will any of them age into eternity? Because eternity has a published retention policy, and it is the strangest document in the whole architecture: almost nothing survives, one format survives forever, and the deletion is more absolute than any takedown you have ever feared.

The survival clause first. "The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever." "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away." "He that doeth the will of God abideth for ever." One format with an eternal cache: the word of God, and the doers of it. Everything aligned with that format inherits its retention. Everything else is grass — beautiful in season, viral in season, gone.

Then the audit. Paul describes the day every builder's work is run through fire — gold, silver, precious stones survive the burn; wood, hay, stubble do not — "the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is." There it is: the content audit at the end of the age, format by format, post by post. Some feeds come through the fire refined. Some creators are saved "yet so as by fire" — the soul rescued, the entire catalog a smoke column. The fire does not check the metrics. It checks the material.

And then the deletion clause, which is the one to read slowly. Of the tares, the end is not eternal notoriety — it is oblivion. "They shall be as though they had not been." "Their memorial is perished with them." "The name of the wicked shall rot." "Yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be." Neither root nor branch. Not seen, not heard, not remembered — the very memory withdrawn, the archive not merely burned but unwritten. It is as if they never existed. Poof.

Sit with the asymmetry, because it inverts the entire fear structure of the creator economy. The influencer's terror is being forgotten, and the influencer's strategy is to post against oblivion — but the old book says oblivion is not the fate of the obscure faithful; it is the fate of the fruitless famous. The widow's two mites have been reposted for two thousand years by the only Account that never goes down; the names of the men who ran the temple's engagement economy are dust. Obscurity in the algorithm and remembrance in eternity are not correlated. If anything, the correlation runs the other way.

The Call

So here is the call, and it is an invitation, not a condemnation — this house does not do condemnation; the ledger above is heavy enough without any commentary from me.

You already hold the instrument. A voice, an audience, a distribution channel of the exact kind this era runs on — and this house holds, as labeled conviction, that this era is the season of an outpouring, and that the voice of the hour is not one strongman's solo but a choir: many ordinary voices, filled and speaking, which from a distance is what Scripture calls thunder. The casting for that choir is open. It has no follower minimum and no verification badge; the only credential is asking to be rained on, and the ask-clause has been published for twenty-five hundred years: ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain.

Which means the choice in front of you is not "influence or don't." You will influence; the followers are already following. The choice is the sheet music. The siren's solo — beautiful, engaging, rewarded by every algorithm, terminating on the rocks with the audience's bones. Or a part in the thunder — your same voice, your same craft, your same reach, keyed to the eight harmonics of the city that lasts, routed onward like Paul's funnel, spending its talents toward the only like that compounds, and producing work in the one format the fire cannot touch.

Your free will is in operation. Your choices are consequential. Those two sentences are the whole dignity of your position, and they are also its whole weight. The pen is mightier than the sword — but only in a hand that has counted the cost of holding it. Count it. Then post like the fire is real, the ledger is open, and the Producer is listening for thunder.

One like is coming that outweighs the internet. Post for that one.

Sources and tiers, in the discipline of the house. SPINE — the texts as cited: the praise-of-men verdict (John 12:43); blind guides and the shared ditch (Matthew 15:14); the millstone duty-of-care (Luke 17:1–2; Matthew 18:6); Paul's conduit architecture (1 Corinthians 11:1); the deliberate thinning of the crowd (John 6:60–68); the eight exclusions (Revelation 21:8); the paid-in-full receipt clause, ἀπέχουσιν as a commercial term (Matthew 6:1–6, 16); the talents and the pounds with their four-word payout (Matthew 25:14–30; Luke 19:12–27); the anti-metrics instruction to the seventy (Luke 10:17–20); the survival clauses (Isaiah 40:6–8 with 1 Peter 1:24–25; Matthew 24:35; 1 John 2:17); the fire audit (1 Corinthians 3:11–15); the oblivion clauses (Obadiah 16; Psalm 9:6; Proverbs 10:7; Psalm 37:10; Psalm 109:15; Malachi 4:1); the widow's mites (Mark 12:41–44). The siren figure is Homer (Odyssey XII), used as figure. SCAFFOLD — the readings laid over the text: the eight exclusions inverted as eight positive principles (the governance frame of this house); the like-economy exegesis of the receipt clause; the fire audit applied to content; reach read as a talent. CONVICTION — labeled and fenced: that this is the season of the latter-rain outpouring, and that the thunder of Revelation 10 is the massed voice of the rained-on — carried in the companion exhibits 'The Former Rain and the Latter Rain' and 'The Seven Thunders' at TheTimeOfTheReturn.com, with the asymmetry stated there: if the season-reading is wrong, asking costs nothing. No claim is made about the interior state of any influencer; the pattern is public, the heart is not, and the free will named throughout is the reader's own.
