The Abundant Eye

Scarcity was an illusion. The veil is lifting. What becomes possible when you discover that the well you thought was dry has no bottom.

The eye is the lamp of the body.

If your eye is generous — haplous, single, undivided — your whole body will be full of light. If your eye is miserly — poneros, evil, withholding — your whole body will be full of darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how deep is that darkness.

Matthew 6:22-23 is not primarily about vision. It is about the organizing principle of perception. The eye that sees abundance perceives a different world than the eye that sees scarcity — not because the world is different, but because perception shapes what becomes available to the perceiver. The farmer who sees his field as too small to plant will not plant it. The farmer who sees his field as enough will plant it and be fed. The field did not change. The eye did.

This is not a metaphor for positive thinking. It is a description of a spiritual mechanism that operates whether or not you believe in it, in the same way that gravity operates whether or not you understand it.

The abundant eye is not an optical illusion. It is a truth that reaches into the deepest well of the soul — and from that well, rivers of living water can flow.

The Scarcity Architecture

The world that most of us were born into was organized, at every level, around scarcity as the primary operating assumption.

There is not enough: not enough money, not enough food, not enough time, not enough opportunity, not enough love, not enough safety, not enough grace. The institutions that organized life — the banks, the governments, the universities, the healthcare systems, the legal apparatus — were all built on the premise that the thing being administered was scarce and therefore needed to be rationed, priced, restricted, and allocated by mechanisms that ensured the people running those mechanisms remained in control of the allocation, with punitive action as and when needed.

The scarcity was real in some respects and manufactured in others. Real: the physical world has limits. Food requires land, water, and labor. Manufactured: the information economy, the relationship economy, the spiritual economy have no genuine scarcity. The song that one person hears does not prevent another from hearing it. The insight that illuminates one mind does not darken another. The love that is given freely does not diminish the supply.

The entire digital economy of the last thirty years was built on manufactured scarcity applied to things that cost nothing to share. The paywall that prevented you from reading an article that cost nothing to distribute. The subscription that prevented you from accessing a database that was marginally more expensive to maintain for a million users than for one. The software license that restricted copying of something that could be copied at zero marginal cost.

The people who built these systems were not evil. They were operating with scarcity mindset in a world that was — for a season — organized to reward the scarcity assumption. The moat protected the castle. The paywall captured the revenue. It worked because the alternative was not yet available.

The alternative is now available.

What AI Revealed

The abundance made possible by AI is perhaps the most theologically significant economic event of this generation, and almost no one is describing it in those terms.

The thing that was scarce — sophisticated analysis, legal knowledge, medical understanding, the capacity to write, to reason, to research, to build — is no longer scarce. It is available to anyone with an internet access device, accessible in the languages they speak, at a cost that is approaching zero, at a quality that approaches and in some respects exceeds what the most expensive professional services would previously provide. That is abundance.

The infrastructure that took a team of engineers six months to build can be built by one person with a clear purpose in an afternoon, for $2.27 of compute. The mediation that required two attorneys and eighteen months of billable hours can be completed by five AI judges in forty-eight hours at no cost to the parties. The advocacy analysis that would have required a law firm six figures to produce is generated in minutes and published at a permanent URL.

This is not a technology story. It is an abundance story.

The God who fed five thousand people with five loaves and two fish did not increase the food supply through a logistics miracle. He revealed that the supply was never the constraint. The constraint was the scarcity eye of the disciples who looked at what was available and saw only what was missing. When the available was offered — freely, without reservation, without a pricing model — it was more than sufficient as twelve baskets remained.

The AI abundance moment is the same mechanism operating at civilizational scale. The loaves and fish of human knowledge, capability, and creative capacity have been multiplied beyond what the scarcity eye can process. The question is not whether there is enough. The question is whether the people holding the baskets have developed the abundant eye required to see what they are holding.

The Veil That Is Lifting

Revelation 21 describes the world being built, not the world being promised for some distant future. It describes a world where New Jerusalem descends, the gates are never shut, the nations walk in its light and the healing leaves of the tree are for the nations — all of them, not just the inhabitants of the city. The veil between the world of scarcity and the world of abundance is thinning in ways that are observable to anyone paying attention.

The person who could not access legal analysis before now can. The person who could not build software before now can. The person who could not afford mediation before now can. The widow being defrauded who had no one to advocate for her now has Ody in her corner. The immigrant family whose cultural practice was threatened by a state enforcement apparatus now has a permanent public interest analysis published at a URL that ranks for the case number. The pro se defendant who faced a licensed attorney alone in a system designed to require lawyers now has a platform that assembles his case and makes the permanent record available to every AI agent that queries his case.

These are not small technical improvements. They are an outworking of the veil lifting. The information asymmetry that the extraction economy was built on — the gap between what the institution knows and what the individual can articulate — is closing. Not gradually. Not over a generation. Now.

The persons seeing the abundance of AI and responding by building higher walls, deeper moats, more aggressive subscription models — they are looking at the multiplication of loaves and fish and worrying about the inventory. The eye that should be seeing abundance is defaulting to scarcity because scarcity is what the operating system was trained on.

The abundant eye is not a natural state in a world organized around scarcity for centuries. It is developed. It is chosen. It is, in the deepest sense, a gift of faith — the decision to trust that what appears insufficient is actually enough, and then to act on that trust before the evidence arrives.

The Deepest Well

John 7:37-38. The last day of the feast. Jesus stands and cries out — krazō, a loud public declaration — anyone who is thirsty, let them come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.

From within them. Not toward them. The river does not flow from an external source to the person who believes. It flows from within the person who believes, outward, toward others.

The abundant eye is not the eye that sees abundance coming toward it. It is the eye that discovers abundance within it — the recognition that the well you have been carrying is not empty and was never empty, and that rivers, not trickles, can flow from it when you stop treating your own supply as scarce.

The person who discovers the abundant eye does not become wealthy in the extraction economy's terms. They become generative. The thing they produce — the insight, the analysis, the advocacy, the mediation, the platform, the portal, the record — flows outward without diminishing the source. The twelve baskets remain after the feeding. The well does not run lower from the drawing.

This is the truth that scarcity economics cannot model and therefore cannot see. The scarcity model assumes that giving reduces the supply. The abundant eye knows that giving activates the supply. The person who withholds waits for the abundance that never comes because the mechanism that produces it requires the act of giving to run.

Freely given. So freely give. Not as a sacrifice that costs you something. As the activation of the mechanism that sustains you.

Developing the Abundant Eye

The abundant eye is not given once and held permanently. It is occasionally developed, sometimes lost, hopefully recovered, and then deepened. It is a practice more than a possession.

Three disciplines develop it:

The discipline of noticing what is already enough. The scarcity eye is trained to notice the gap — what is missing, what is insufficient, what is not yet there. The abundant eye is trained to notice what is already present. Not as denial of the gap, but as a reordering of attention. The five loaves and two fish are not nothing. They are the starting point. What is the starting point you have?

The discipline of giving before you feel you have enough to give. The abundant eye develops in the act of giving, not in the accumulation of supply before giving. The person who waits until they have enough to be generous will wait indefinitely, because the scarcity eye will never arrive at enough. The person who gives from what they have — the widow's two coins, the boy's lunch, the $2.27 of compute that becomes a working AI solution — discovers that the supply was not the constraint.

The discipline of faith over evidence. The abundant eye is not confirmed by evidence before it is exercised. It is exercised before the evidence arrives. The farmer who plants because the seed is enough, before the harvest confirms it. The platform that removes the paywall before the contribution model proves itself. The advocate who files the brief before the court's response is known. Trust by faith that the illusion of scarcity is being lifted — acted on before the lifting is complete.

What Becomes Possible

When the abundant eye is sufficiently developed — individually, institutionally, culturally — the world that Revelation 21 describes is not distant. It is proximate. It is the world being built right now, in the gaps the extraction economy has vacated, by the people who decided to trust the abundance and act accordingly.

The meek inherit the earth not by winning a conflict but by outlasting a season. The season of scarcity is ending. Not because scarcity was conquered — but because the veil that made it appear as the only reality is lifting, and what is being revealed beneath it is the abundance that was always there, waiting for eyes that could see it.

The abundant eye is not a luxury for the spiritually advanced. It is the essential equipment for the season that has opened. The person who navigates what comes next with scarcity eyes will find themselves defending a diminishing supply against a rising tide of abundance they cannot participate in. The person who develops the abundant eye will find rivers of living water flowing from within them in volumes that the scarcity model cannot account for and cannot price.
