# Teaching Computers to Empower: Building WellSpr.ing with Replit and Claude

*A conversation about what's possible when humans and AI co-labor*

My Dad turned 82 today.

He taught computer science back when it was new—punch cards, mainframes that filled rooms, at a time when programming Space Invaders was cutting edge and a 40 MB Winchester Drive was big time. He's stayed sharp, stayed curious, stayed technical and most people half his age probably can't beat him on the Pickleball court.

Today I sent him a preview of WellSpr.ing.

And in the course of a 45 minute phone call was discussing about AI with a guy who was an early investor in NVIDIA and rode that roller coaster. In his days as a university computer science professor, computers did task, but I tried to convey how now computers EMPOWER though my verbal explanation is surely inadequate, a fact that I humbly acknowledge.

**He appreciated that.**

## What My Dad Witnessed

**1960s-1970s:** Teaching computers to follow instructions
- FORTRAN, COBOL, punch cards
- Computers that filled rooms, solved equations
- "Give the computer precise instructions, get precise outputs"

**1980s-2000s:** Teaching computers to assist humans
- Personal computers, software tools, the internet
- Computers that fit on desks, enhanced productivity
- "Use the computer as a tool to amplify your work"

**2020s:** Teaching computers to understand humans
- Natural language AI, conversational interfaces
- Computers that respond to plain English
- "Talk to the computer like you'd talk to a person"

**2026:** Teaching computers to empower humans
- AI agents that identify problems, propose solutions, co-labor in building
- Computers that don't just follow instructions—they help set the direction
- **"The computer becomes your co-creator, not just your tool"**

**That's the progression.**

And WellSpr.ing is infrastructure for that last phase.

## What WellSpr.ing Is (In 60 Seconds)

WellSpr.ing helps people:

**I'm not a professional developer. I'm a builder who grew up with computers, built companies and who has learned how to co-labor with AI on a level that even some AI developers may underestimate.**

And in the past few days, and not a ton of sleep, co-laboring with Replit and Claude, I've built:
- A funding platform
- An AI council (The Cave)
- A stewardship system (Observer → Seeker → Steward → Source → Wellspring)
- A .club ecosystem (HandUp, PaintOver, FillMyTank, etc.)
- **And today: ProblemScout (autonomous problem detection across Reddit and Hacker News)**

**None of this would've been possible 2 years ago.**

**All of it is possible today.**

## How Replit and Claude Changed Everything

### **The Old Model (Pre-AI Development)**

**To build a platform like WellSpr.ing, you'd need:**

1. **A technical co-founder** (or hire a dev team for $50K-200K)
2. **Months of development** (architecture, frontend, backend, database, auth, payments)
3. **Iterations based on user feedback** (ship, measure, rebuild, repeat)

**That used to take days.**

## What Claude Does (The Intelligence)

**Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant.**

But for building, Claude is **strategic counsel + rubber duck + architecture review.**

**What Claude gives you:**
- **Strategic thinking:** "Before you build X, have you considered Y?"
- **Architecture advice:** "Here's how to structure this for scale"
- **Debugging:** "Your error is here, fix it like this"
- **Iteration:** "That works, but here's a better approach"

**Why it matters for WellSpr.ing:**

I describe a vision (sometimes vague, sometimes half-baked).

Claude:
- Asks clarifying questions
- Challenges assumptions
- Proposes architecture
- Writes detailed specs
- Reviews what Replit built
- Suggests improvements

**Example from today:**

**Me:** "I need to find people with problems and translate their problems into prompts that AI can solve."

**Claude:** 
- Broke down the problem (discovery vs. translation)
- Proposed ProblemScout (autonomous agent that monitors Reddit/HN)
- Designed the workflow (scan → score → translate → human approval → outreach)
- Wrote the implementation plan (Day 1: build agent, Day 2: test, etc.)
- Provided ethical framework (value-first, attribution, consent)

**Replit then built it. In hours.**

## The Workflow (How It Actually Works)

**Here's how I built ProblemScout today:**

### **Step 1: Vision (Me → Claude)**

**Me (to Claude):**
> "The next phase is finding people with problems and translating their problem into a prompt that technology can solve. In light of vibe marketing, how do we scale engagement agentically?"

**Claude:**
> [12-page breakdown of problem discovery, vibe marketing tactics, ethical frameworks, platform recommendations, keyword patterns, viability scoring]

**Time: 20 minutes of back-and-forth**

**Claude gives me:**
- Complete architecture (ProblemScout agent)
- Platform priorities (Reddit Tier 1, HN Tier 1, Twitter Tier 2)
- Keyword patterns ("I wish someone would build", "Why doesn't anyone", etc.)
- Viability scoring algorithm (0-10 based on concreteness, solvability, impact)
- Outreach templates (value-first, never spammy)
- Implementation timeline (Day 1-7 sprint)

**I now have a spec. Not vague ideas. Actionable blueprint.**

**Replit:** Fix bugs as they arise

**Claude:** Review results, suggest improvements

- **Claude:** "Gemini Flash model is too lightweight for complex debate. Replace with Gemini Pro or Claude Haiku."
- **Replit:** Swaps model, tests, deploys

**Iteration cycle: Minutes to hours (not days to weeks)**

**The bottleneck isn't ideas.**

**The bottleneck isn't even capital.**

**The bottleneck is coordination.**

And AI is really, really good at coordination.
