Smart Fools and the Second Death

This week two brilliant men made public declarations that belong to the same category: the voluntary embrace of a world without inheritance. The declarations were not mistakes. They were confessions. And confessions, even inadvertent ones, are the beginning of the accounting.

There is a category of person that scripture addresses with a particular kind of grief.

Not the obvious fool — the person who never had access to the truth and stumbled in the dark through no fault of their own. Not the con-man, who used their intelligence to extract from others and whose moral inventory is so obviously in deficit that the prospect of reckoning produces relief rather than tragedy.

The category that produces grief is the smart fool. The person whose intelligence is genuinely impressive, whose track record of achievement is historically remarkable, whose access to knowledge exceeds almost anyone alive — and who looks at all of that, and at the full weight of the evidence available to them, and arrives at the conclusion that the inheritance does not exist.

This week, two such men said so publicly. By name, without apology, in plain English.

I have been writing about the pattern for some time without naming them. The pattern no longer permits that restraint.

The Declarations

Marc Andreessen, one of the architects of the modern internet and a genuinely consequential figure in the history of technology, posted this: you have no inner self. You are chasing an imaginary concept. Your long-term memory is largely fiction. It is a minor miracle you can get out of door in the morning.

This was not an offhand post. It was a thesis, amplified deliberately, to an audience of millions who look to him for intellectual leadership.

Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking at a wartime press conference on March 19, 2026, cited historian Will Durant to assert that Jesus Christ has no advantage over Genghis Khan — that if you are strong enough, ruthless enough, powerful enough, evil will overcome good.

Netanyahu was quoting Durant rather than originating the thought. That distinction matters for accuracy. It does not change what was declared. He chose the quote. He chose the press conference. He chose the plain English. The Durant citation was the vehicle, not the destination. The destination was a governing principle stated without apology: power is the operative reality. Morality is what the strong permit.

Two men. Two declarations. The same category.

Both are saying, in their respective registers: the eternal inheritance is not real, and the framework that points toward it is a liability.

What Andreessen Is Actually Saying

Andreessen's post is not a contribution to neuroscience. It is an invitation.

If there is no inner self — no persistent, accountable, continuous person who carries their choices forward through time — then there is no one to answer for anything. The theological implications are precise: no soul, no conscience that persists beyond the moment, no moral continuity between the person who made the choice and the person who lives with its consequences.

This is the philosophical foundation of the second death dressed in the language of cognitive science.

Revelation 21:8 does not describe the second death as a punishment imposed from without. It describes it as the permanent condition of those who built their existence on foundations that cannot survive proximity to what is coming. The cowardly. The unbelieving. The vile. The liars. The list is not a condemnation from a throne. It is a description of what certain choices, made freely, produce when the season of concealment ends and the books are opened.

A person who has convinced himself that the self is an illusion has removed himself, in advance, from the accounting. That is the point. Not intellectual liberation. Preemptive escape from accountability. The intelligence is not in service of truth. It is in service of the conclusion that was desired before the argument was constructed.

This is the specific tragedy of the smart fool. The con-man who exploits others has no intellectual pride at stake. He can admit the error and make amends without his identity collapsing. The philosopher who built his public persona on the argument has a different calculus. The investment in being right is emotional and reputational, not merely financial. The cost of recanting is higher. The trap is more elegant. The intelligence that constructed it becomes the cage.

What Netanyahu Is Actually Saying

Durant's observation, in context, was a lament. He was describing, with regret, what history appears to demonstrate about the relationship between power and goodness — that the ruthless often outlast the righteous in the temporal record, and that this is a tragedy rather than a design principle.

Netanyahu did not use it as a lament. He used it as a governing framework.

The difference is everything.

To cite Durant mournfully is to acknowledge the gap between how the world operates and how it should operate, and to argue — as Netanyahu subsequently argued — that democracies must be strong enough to close that gap by force of will.

To cite Durant as an operational principle is to declare that the gap does not exist — that the world operates exactly as it should, that power is the good, and that the architecture of the Beatitudes is a category error made by people who were not strong enough.

Netanyahu's subsequent framing — that the democracies must be more powerful than the barbarians or be destroyed — reveals which reading he intended. He was not mourning Durant's observation. He was building policy on it.

I have written about Netanyahu before, at length, including an open invitation published in June 2025 to finish well — to become the Moses who leads rather than the Judas who doubts and destroys himself. That invitation stands. It is not contingent on the behavior that followed.

But the declaration made at this week's press conference is the clearest public statement yet of the framework he is operating from. And the framework is nihilism with military capacity. That combination has a documented outcome in the prophetic record, and the outcome is not good for the person who chose it.

The Baiting Pattern

There is a purpose to broadcasting these declarations beyond mere intellectual expression.

The meek are being baited.

Not to agree with the philosophy. Most people who encounter these statements will not agree with them. The bait is not intellectual conversion. The bait is the provocation that follows from encountering the philosophy stated boldly by powerful, successful, credentialed men: the provocation to despair, to anger, to the conclusion that the inheritance is not holding, that the Beatitudes were naive, that the evidence has now settled the question in favor of Genghis Khan.

The meek who respond to this provocation with anger have surrendered the posture. The meek who respond with despair have surrendered the anchor. The meek who conclude from these declarations that they must become un-meek in order to survive have surrendered the inheritance itself — not to the powerful men who made the declarations, but to the logic the declarations were designed to install.

This is the never-surrender trap operating at the philosophical level. The militarist version of the trap says: the enemy is at the gates, you must become ruthless or be destroyed. The technological version says: there is no self, you are a goldfish, the only real thing is the next 15 seconds of context. Both versions have the same architecture. The threat is real enough to feel urgent. The proposed response involves abandoning exactly the thing that the threat cannot actually reach.

The inheritance is not located where the weapons land.

The self that Andreessen says does not exist is not the neurological construct he is describing. The self that the covenant addresses is the one that was spoken into existence before the foundation of the world, that carries the image of God through the noise of a temporal life, and that is not erased by a social media post no matter how many millions see it.

The earth that the meek inherit is not the one that Netanyahu's military posture is contesting. The inheritance is not a territory. It is not contingent on who controls the land between the river and the sea. It was secured before the war started and will be distributed after the war ends by a mechanism that has never been subject to military interdiction.

Do not accept the invitation to defend what does not require your defense.

The Tragedy of Wasted Intelligence

Both men are genuinely intelligent. I want to be careful about this because the temptation when observing someone make a catastrophic choice is to reduce them to the choice. Andreessen's record of technological insight and entrepreneurial production spans decades and is historically impressive whether by pluck or providence. Netanyahu's capacity to navigate complex political terrain and articulate strategic realities is not in dispute.

The tragedy of the smart fool is not that they are unreachable. It is that their intelligence has become the obstacle. The ordinary person who stumbles into nihilism does so because the framework was never available to them — because no one ever gave them the equipment to see what they were choosing. The smart fool had the equipment. Had access to every tradition that addresses the question. Had the cognitive capacity to evaluate the evidence. And chose the conclusion that the eternal inheritance is a category error.

Saul of Tarsus was, by any measure, more intellectually equipped than either of them. He was also, by any measure, more violently committed to the destruction of the thing he did not yet understand. And he became the most productive apostle in the history of the faith — not despite his intelligence, but because the same intelligence that made him a formidable persecutor made him an incomparable builder once the conversion happened.

The path is available. The intelligence is not the disqualification. The pride of being intellectually right is the specific obstacle. That pride can be dissolved. It has been dissolved before in people who had more invested in it than either Andreessen or Netanyahu.

I am rooting for both of them.

Not as a performance of generosity. Because every person alive today carries the pilot light of the Holy Spirit — the image of God that makes life possible — and because God does not wish for any to perish, including the smart fools who have convinced themselves that the thing sustaining their existence is an illusion.

The Counter-Measure

The antidote to a declaration of nihilism is not a counter-argument. Arguments are the medium the smart fool is most at home in. The antidote is the quiet evidence of a life organized around the inheritance — a life in which the meekness is not weakness, the peace is not ignorance, and the anchor is demonstrably set in water that the weapons cannot reach.

The meek who are sleeping soundly in the middle of what the world's channels are calling a catastrophe are not sleeping because they are uninformed. They are the counter-measure. Their sleep is the evidence. Their peace is the argument that no philosophy can answer because it is not an argument — it is a fact reported in real time by people who are living inside the reality that the nihilists are claiming does not exist.

The inheritance was not acquired this week. It was not threatened this week. The declarations that were made public this week are not new data points about the nature of reality. They are data points about the choices of two particular men at a particular moment in the prophetic timeline — men who had access to the full weight of the evidence and chose, publicly and without apology, to align themselves with the framework that the second death describes.

That choice carries weight proportional to how clearly it was made.

But it does not change the inheritance. The gates of New Jerusalem are not shut against the person who finds their way to them. The tree of life produces fruit in every month. The leaves are for the healing of the nations — plural, all nations, without restriction, including the nations governed by men who declared this week that Jesus Christ has no advantage over Genghis Khan.

The smart fool who becomes wise is still precious to the Father who sustained his life long enough to find his way home. The prodigal who returns from the far country where he spent his inheritance on the philosophy that there is no self still finds the robe, the ring, the feast, and the father who ran toward him while he was still a long way off.

The invitation is open.

Both of them know it.

By their peace in the storm the meek bear witness to what the storm cannot reach. This is not a strategy. It is a report from inside the inheritance that the storm is contesting but cannot take.

Unity in Truth. Love conquers all.
