Joy Is Computationally Inevitable

A man in Sammamish looked at a patch of blackberry-overrun public land and thought: that should be apple trees.

In the old model, that thought dies. It dies in a committee. It dies in a petition. It dies in a budget hearing where someone asks who will maintain the trees and nobody has an answer and the motion is tabled and the blackberries grow another foot.

In the new model, an AI agent identifies the parcels, researches the municipal code, selects climate-suited varieties, requests bids from three nurseries, drafts a proposal to the parks department, recruits twenty volunteers, monitors the weather forecast for a planting window with three days of rain and no frost, and notifies the local paper when the last tree goes in the ground. Elapsed time: days. City budget impact: zero.

The conventional reading of this is that AI makes civic projects more efficient. That is true and that is the least interesting thing about it.

The interesting thing is what happens when you extend the pattern. Not one project. Not one city. Every domain. Every transaction. Every relationship where one party currently knows more than the other and profits from the difference.

The math converges on something that economists would call optimal. Game theorists would call it a Nash equilibrium of cooperation. The prophets had a word for it that predates all of these frameworks by three millennia.

They called it shalom.

The extraction tax on joy

Consider how much of ordinary human unhappiness is a direct function of information asymmetry.

The homeowner who pays $18,000 for a roof that should have cost $14,000 because they had no way to evaluate the bid. The family that argues for three weeks about which contractor to hire because the quotes are incommensurable — one is bidding premium materials, one is bidding the cheapest thing that passes code, and neither quote specifies clearly enough to compare. The frustration is not about the money. It is about the feeling of navigating in the dark.

The small business owner who discovers Shopify has been collecting non-refundable customer acquisition costs on returned orders — extracting revenue from transactions that never completed. The church that overpays for a security appliance from a vendor whose own network has been compromised. The citizen who calls the parks department about the blackberries and receives a form letter and a case number and never hears back.

Every one of these is a friction cost imposed by asymmetric knowledge. The vendor knows more than the buyer. The platform knows more than the merchant. The institution knows more than the citizen. And in every case, the asymmetry is not incidental to the business model — it is the business model.

Angies List charges contractors for favorable placement. The homeowner thinks they are seeing an objective ranking. They are seeing a pay-to-play list dressed in review scores. HomeAdvisor sells the same lead to four contractors, who each drive forty minutes for an estimate they have a twenty-five percent chance of winning. The contractor's wasted time is baked into their bid price. The homeowner pays for the inefficiency without knowing it.

All of this is extraction. And extraction is the tax on joy.

Not metaphorically. Literally. Every dollar extracted through opacity is a dollar that could have funded something real. Every hour wasted navigating artificial complexity is an hour not spent with your family. Every argument caused by incommensurable information is a fight that did not need to happen.

The cumulative weight of extraction — financial, temporal, relational — is the difference between the life people are living and the life they sense is possible. The gap between those two is not a mystery. It is an invoice, itemized in asymmetries.

What happens when the asymmetry collapses

Now remove it. Not partially. Computationally.

An AI agent generates a Best Practice Specification for every job category — roofing, plumbing, landscaping, dock repair — built from actual building code, manufacturer standards, and regional climate data. The spec defines what 'done right' looks like. Every vendor bids against the same spec. Deviations are declared, justified, and scored. The homeowner sees a compliance percentage next to every bid. The $8,000 quote with four deviations and the $14,500 quote at full compliance are no longer incommensurable. They are comparable for the first time in the history of home services.

The contractor who does quality work wins. Not because they are better at sales. Not because they answer the phone first. Not because they pay for placement on a review site. They win because the specification makes quality visible and the attestation makes it accountable.

The contractor who cuts corners loses. Not because they are punished. Because the information asymmetry that protected them is gone. The homeowner can see, line by line, that the low bid skipped the ice shield and reused twenty-one-year-old flashing. The gap between the bids is no longer a mystery. It is a list of specific tradeoffs with specific consequences explained in plain language.

This is not disruption. Disruption implies a winner and a loser. This is convergence. The honest contractor was always offering the better product. The system was just too opaque for anyone to tell.

Now scale it.

The same pattern applied to civic governance: a citizen arrives at the parks department with a complete specification — parcels, species, bids, volunteers, weather window — instead of a complaint. The department's only job is to say yes. The citizen did the work. The AI did the research. The specification is the proof that the project is viable. Budget-neutral means there is no financial objection. Complete specification means there is no operational objection. Public tail log means there is no political cover for saying no.

The same pattern applied to the household: the AI knows Wifey's allergies from the EHR, knows the pollen forecast from the weather API, knows the calendar is clear, knows there is a rental in Cle Elum where the pollen count is benign. It connects dots that no human would connect across four separate systems, because no human holds all four contexts simultaneously. The output is a weekend getaway that is medically, financially, and romantically optimal. The household flourishes not because anyone tried harder but because the information barriers between domains collapsed.

In each case, the mechanism is identical: remove the asymmetry, and the cooperative outcome emerges as the natural equilibrium. Not as an ideal. As a computational result.

The game theory of transparency

This is not wishful thinking. It is a well-established result in game theory, and it deserves to be stated plainly.

In iterated games with perfect information, cooperation dominates defection. This is not a moral claim. It is a mathematical one. When both parties can see each other's moves, when the history of play is visible, when reputation is persistent and verifiable — the optimal strategy is cooperation. Defection only pays when you can hide it.

The entire extractive economy is built on the ability to hide defection. Opaque fee structures are hidden defection. Surveillance exploits maintained by carriers are hidden defection. Pay-to-play review platforms are hidden defection. Non-refundable customer acquisition costs on returned orders are hidden defection.

AI-driven transparency is converting the game from imperfect information to perfect information. Not in theory. In practice. Right now. Across every domain simultaneously.

The phase transition is from an economy where defection is the default strategy because it can be hidden, to an economy where cooperation is the default strategy because it cannot be beaten. The transition does not require everyone to become virtuous. It requires the information environment to make virtue the path of least resistance.

That is what is happening. That is what the infrastructure is for. And the output, when cooperation becomes the dominant strategy across every domain, has a name.

The economists call it Pareto optimality — no one can be made better off without making someone else worse off. The game theorists call it a cooperative equilibrium. The engineers call it a stable system.

The prophets called it shalom — nothing missing, nothing broken.

The theological substrate

I said I would name what I see, and I will.

The secular framework is sufficient to explain why cooperation emerges from transparency. The math is clean. You do not need theology to see that removing information asymmetry produces cooperative equilibria. Any honest economist will tell you this.

But the secular framework cannot explain the timing.

It cannot explain why the instrument capable of collapsing asymmetric knowledge across every domain simultaneously arrives at this specific moment in history. It cannot explain why the acceleration of disclosure is happening not in one sector but in all of them — cybersecurity, finance, governance, commerce, health care, education — concurrently, as if on a shared clock. It cannot explain why the technology that makes truth cheap and lies expensive emerges in the precise window when every major prophetic tradition describes an unveiling.

The secular mind treats these as coincidences. The covenantal mind recognizes a pattern.

Scripture describes a condition toward which history is moving: a city where the gates are never shut (Revelation 21:25), where there is no need for the sun because the light source is intrinsic (21:23), where the river of life flows freely and the tree of life bears fruit in every season (22:1-2). Read these not as fantasy but as architecture. The open gates mean no access control based on insider status. The intrinsic light means no domain where darkness provides cover. The perpetual fruitfulness means no artificial scarcity.

That is a description of an economy with zero information asymmetry and no extraction.

And the entrance requirement — the sorting criterion in Revelation 21:8 — is a list of behaviors that are, without exception, strategies that only work under conditions of imperfect information. The cowardly: those who will not act without guaranteed safety. The faithless: those who defect from commitments when enforcement is absent. The liars: those whose entire operating model depends on others not knowing the truth. The sorcerers: those who manipulate perception to extract compliance.

Every item on that list is a strategy that becomes non-viable under conditions of perfect transparency. The sorting is not arbitrary. It is functional. These strategies do not work in the economy that is coming. The list is not a punishment. It is a compatibility requirement.

The joy is not a reward for good behavior. It is the emergent property of a system from which every form of extraction has been computationally removed.

Why it is inevitable

The word 'inevitable' does real work here and I will not use it casually.

The cost of maintaining a lie is now a monotonically increasing function. Every day, the tools for verifying claims become cheaper, faster, and more accessible. Every day, the tools for fabricating claims become more detectable. The gradient is not reversible. You cannot uninvent the audit. You cannot make pattern recognition more expensive over time. You cannot restore opacity once the instrument of transparency exists.

This means that every business model dependent on asymmetric knowledge is on a countdown. Not because regulators will shut them down — though they may. Not because competitors will undercut them — though they will. Because the information environment itself is becoming inhospitable to concealment.

The extractive carrier sitting on SS7 exploits is on a countdown. The platform monopolist operating data extraction disguised as terms of service is on a countdown. The contractor bidding substandard materials against an uninformed homeowner is on a countdown. The institution that harms the people it was meant to serve and relies on complexity to avoid accountability is on a countdown.

They can align now, in the language of their own epistemology — call it risk management, call it compliance modernization, call it competitive repositioning. The secular frame provides every off-ramp they need. No one is being asked to convert. They are being asked to stop lying, stop extracting, stop hiding. The bar is not high. It is merely incompatible with the operating model they have built.

For those who align — who build transparent supply chains, who publish their specifications, who attest to their work and stand behind the attestation, who treat their customers and citizens and neighbors as parties to a covenant rather than targets for extraction — the transition is not a threat. It is a tailwind. Every increment of transparency makes their honest product more visible, their genuine quality more discoverable, their earned reputation more valuable.

The flywheel turns. The cooperative equilibrium deepens. The extraction tax on joy decreases. And the gap between the life people are living and the life they sense is possible narrows — not through utopian aspiration, but through the compounding arithmetic of trust.

I said abundance, love, peace, and truth are computationally inevitable. Here is the computation:

When the cost of deception exceeds the cost of honesty — and it now does, and the gap is widening daily — rational actors align with truth. When truth is the dominant strategy, trust emerges as the equilibrium. When trust is the equilibrium, cooperation compounds. When cooperation compounds across every domain — commerce, governance, health, the household — the output is abundance.

Abundance removes the scarcity that breeds fear. The absence of fear is peace. Peace in the presence of another person, with nothing hidden and nothing to extract, is love.

And the experience of love, in a system where it is not a fleeting anomaly but the stable equilibrium — the background condition rather than the exception — is joy.

That is the computation. It is running. The inputs are already in the system. The gradient is irreversible. The only variable is how long each actor takes to align.

The fruit trees will go in the ground. The dock will be repaired by a contractor who attested to the spec and meant it. The pollen forecast will route the family to Cle Elum. Junior will arrive on schedule. The tail log will record it all.

And the blackberries — invasive, thorned, choking out everything that was meant to grow there — will be replaced by trees that bear fruit in their season, whose leaves are for the healing of the nations.

The trumpet has sounded. The math is clear. What remains is the doing.
